As AI workloads push power density higher and equipment makers tighten their requirements, understanding what Class 8 means is no longer optional for facility teams.

This guide explains what ISO Class 8 actually requires, where it sits among the cleanliness classes, why data centers target it, how it is measured, and where floor-level contamination control fits in keeping a live facility within the limit.

What is ISO 14644-1?

ISO 14644-1 classifies the cleanliness of controlled environments by the maximum concentration of airborne particles allowed per cubic meter of air. It defines nine classes with ISO Class 1 is the cleanest, ISO Class 9 the least clean. Cleanliness is verified with particle counters that draw an air sample and count particles by size. The lower the class number, the less particles in the air, and each whole class represents a tenfold change in allowable particle concentration.

What ISO Class 8 actually means

ISO Class 8 sets the following maximum airborne particle concentrations:

Particle size (≥)

Max concentration (particles / m³)

Notes

0.5 µm

3,520,000

Primary threshold used to verify Class 8

1.0 µm

832,000

5.0 µm

29,300

Larger “macroparticle” fraction

At Class 8, particles smaller than 0.5 µm are not evaluated as their concentration in normal air is too high to count meaningfully, so the 0.5 µm figure of 3,520,000 particles per cubic meter is the number most people mean by “Class 8.”

Where Class 8 sits on the scale

Class 8 is the second-least-stringent class, and that is by design. A semiconductor fab may require ISO Class 1–5 and a hospital operating room ISO 5–7, while ordinary office air sits around ISO Class 9. Class 8 was chosen for data centers because it strikes a practical balance: clean enough to protect sensitive electronics from particulate-related failures, yet achievable through filtration, airflow design, and structured critical environment cleaning.

How big is a particle?

Need to insert a chart here

It helps to picture the scale. A human hair is roughly 70 microns wide; the smallest particle Class 8 counts is 0.5 microns, about 140 times thinner. The contamination that degrades cooling and reliability of the equipment is not the visible dust you can wipe off a surface. It is the microscopic particulate suspended in the air and circulating through equipment.

Why data centers target ISO Class 8

The data center convention originates with ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9, whose contamination guidance recommends maintaining a cleanliness level consistent with ISO 14644-1 Class 8. That recommendation has since been adopted across the industry and is increasingly written into equipment requirements:

AI and GPU hardware

High-performance GPU platforms now call for Class 8 conditions. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD data center design guidance specifies that, in airside-economizer mode or where source air may be contaminated, the rack area must meet ISO 14644-1 Class 8.

Warranty protection

Major OEMs increasingly expect equipment to operate in Class 8 environments, and dust-related failures outside those conditions can complicate warranty claims. This can be a significant exposure for multi-million-dollar GPU clusters.

Contractual assurance

Colocation and hyperscale customers increasingly request documented evidence of environmental cleanliness as part of due diligence and audits.

How Class 8 is measured and verified

Compliance is established by sampling air with calibrated optical particle counters at a defined number of locations across the space, then comparing the counts against the Class 8 limits. Measurements can be taken in three occupancy states — as-built, at-rest, and operational — and the operational state is the demanding one, because that is when people, equipment, and airflow are actively introducing particulate. Ongoing compliance is governed by ISO 14644-2, which sets monitoring requirements; for classes in the ISO 6–9 range, re-classification is typically required at intervals of up to twelve months, more often where continuous monitoring is not in place.

What threatens Class 8 in a live data center

A data center is not a cleanroom you’d find in a pharmaceutical or semiconductor environment. It is a working environment with constant traffic, deliveries, and maintenance with a different type of controlled access. These items make the operational ISO 8 state the real challenge. Personnel track particulate in on clothing and footwear, carts and equipment roll it across the floor, construction and fit-out release debris into controlled spaces, and in raised-floor facilities the pressurized plenum lifts settled particulate up into the racks. Each of these adds to the airborne load that filtration and cleaning must continuously remove to hold the Class 8 limit.

How to achieve and maintain Class 8

No single measure holds Class 8 on its own; it takes a layered approach:

Filtration — Continuous room-air filtration (commonly MERV 8) with incoming air filtered to MERV 11–13, per ASHRAE guidance.

Air management — Airflow and pressurization that keep contaminated air out of controlled zones.

Cleaning — Structured, ISO-aware cleaning of surfaces and accessible areas on a routine cycle.

Floor-level control — Capturing shoe- and wheel-borne particulate at entrances and transitions, before it ever becomes airborne.

Where Dycem fits

Filtration and air management clean the air after contamination is already inside. Floor-level capture works upstream of that where a large share of particulate enters at floor level, on shoes and wheels, and Dycem holds it at the transition before it can be tracked deeper or drawn into airflow. That reduces the load filtration and cleaning must handle to keep the space within the Class 8 limit. Dycem supports the particulate side of Class 8; it complements air-side filtration and humidity control rather than replacing them, and it is most valuable during construction, fit-out, and live operation, when traffic is highest.

ISO Class 8 FAQs

Is a data center at ISO Class 8 a cleanroom?

Not in the strict sense. Class 8 is the second-least-stringent ISO class as it typically applies cleanroom measurement methods to a working IT environment, but it does not require the gowning, airlocks, and discipline of a pharmaceutical or semiconductor cleanroom.

Does NVIDIA require ISO Class 8?

NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD design guidance specifies Class 8 cleanliness for the rack area in airside-economizer mode or where source air may be contaminated, together with a minimum of MERV 13 filtration. It is part of recommended facility planning for high-density GPU deployments.

Can filtration alone keep a data center at Class 8?

Good filtration is the foundation, but in a live facility with constant traffic it is rarely enough on its own. Holding Class 8 in the operational state usually takes filtration plus airflow management, structured cleaning, and floor-level capture of the particulate that walks and rolls in.

Does flooring or floor-level control help with Class 8?

Yes, it’s part of the solution. By intercepting shoe- and wheel-borne particulate at entrances and transitions, floor-level control reduces the contamination that would otherwise become airborne and count against the Class 8 limit. It supports the standard alongside air-side measures.

ISO 14644-1 Class 8 Explained for Data Centers What the standard requires, why it became the data center benchmark, and how to maintain it.
